The Little Ghosts’ Winter is a cheerful and slightly spooky comedy by Anita Grīniete about what ghosts do when, during a Latvian winter, there is no one at the summer house to frighten or confuse. It turns out that a ghost’s life is not nearly as exciting as one might imagine. With no one around to scare, they pass the time with little pranks, amusing adventures, and their relationships with one another.
Luņķis has been reading the same newspaper for three months, and Desa has rearranged the furniture in the room so many times that it seems there can’t possibly be another new layout! Nevertheless, “life” goes on. Spocīte, a new ghost, wanders around the cemetery looking for a home and a name, but she is terrorised by two very unpleasant ghosts – Hanibāls and Kanibāls.
The situation becomes even more complicated when a ghost from Spain arrives. He has clearly made some kind of navigational mistake and ended up not at a sunny resort, but in the middle of a Latvian winter. He speaks Latvian in a rather unusual way, everyone understands only about half of what he says, but one thing is perfectly clear – he is very cold! While the local ghosts drift calmly through the snow, the Spanish ghost complains constantly about the freezing weather. He is firmly convinced that a normal ghost should live under palm trees, not beside a woodshed.
The play is full of misunderstandings, amusing arguments, friendship, and affection. It reminds us that, deep down, ghosts are really much like people: they enjoy chatting, laughing, complaining a little about the weather, and occasionally having a bit of a squabble.
For several years, there has not been a play on the Sydney stage that is suitable for children while still being enjoyable for adults. This play also appeals to grown-ups, combining the atmosphere of a fairy tale with humour and a warm-hearted message about understanding and friendship.
