This film is based on a Latvian classic novel about the bohemian life of a group of struggling artists in Rīga in the 1930’s. A poor young artist arrives in town, eager to make his mark. Whose interpretation of art is correct, who can get patronage, whose exhibition will succeed and whose will fail and, of course, who will get the girl? This always popular novel was turned into the most popular Latvian film of 2018.
If the story doesn’t grab you, or you don’t feel that your Latvian is that good, come for the pure visual experience – the authentic scenes of Rīga in the 1930s, the fabulous award winning costumes, or the high-jinx parties.
